We were Valentines just under a month after our first date. He gave me a puppy from Build-a-Bear holding a heart that said “I love you.” He told me later he was nervous to give it to me because his friends said it was nuts to tell someone you loved them after less than a month of knowing them. But he shouldn’t have been nervous, because we’d both already said it, we both already knew. I gave him a beta fish (yes, a real fish), and a year later, we got married. Our daughter has the puppy in her room, and the fish has long-since died, but we still say I love you every day. We still know.

It’s surreal to think that I’m in the homestretch with this book. 🤯 Just under two years ago, what began as a feeble attempt to process overwhelming anxiety and grief morphed into a creative outlet, then into a fictional 80,000 word story, then into querying agents and finally signing with @hidden_shelf Publishing House. I can’t believe what God has done with this book. Done with me in the writing of this book. Right now, this book is in the hands of several award-winning, multi-published, best-selling authors for endorsements and the only thing I can think is THANK YOU JESUS. 🙌🏼 I can’t wait for it to be in your hands, because ultimately? The Brazos Brownie. Why name a brownie after the river that literally kicked us to the curb and sent us packing? Zac and I have shared hundreds of hours of conversation across thousands of miles all centering on the whys and why nots of the last seven years. Despite the ebb and flow of time, some things have withstood erosion: not the place or the job or the side-hustle or even the passion project, but the call that stretches us awake and yawns long hours into the night. The call to give when there’s nothing left. To be present when attention fades. To love against the pain. To burn a forest of darkness with a single match of faith. This is why they’re named the Brazos Brownies. And it’s also your sign to come see @victorypointtx less than a mile away from the namesake river tomorrow because if you don’t… you’re missing out. God is good. Redemption is sweet.

Today was the culmination of dreams that only God could make real. We are so thankful to our friends at @mygracecommunity for inviting us to serve their amazing congregation this morning—we had such a fun turn out and were overjoyed to see everyone enjoying our coffee (and that all our equipment behaved for the trailer’s maiden voyage 😂)!

🌺 Immersive - What the character is feeling + tasting + touching + seeing—you will too.

🌱 Captivating - There are truly not many books that can hold my attention, but the ones I can’t put down? Those are the ones I model my writing on! Mary Stewart, Agatha Christie, and Jan Karon are my literary heroines.

🐚 Real - I always strive to be authentic in what I’m writing. Often, the truth is hard and ugly and my characters have to wrestle with the reality of their circumstances. I don’t sugar coat 😂 but I also don’t shy away from revealing beauty in its fullness, either!

🌸 Intelligent - I always feel like this will sound like a flex when I’m asked, but I totally don’t mean for it to be! I want my readers to be engaged and to think their way through the story. I’ve been gifted with a love for an eclectic and—often useless—collection of information and want my reader to Google things they don’t know. 🙃 Food, language, classical literature, music and fashion compose the major facets of this in my stories.

Today was one I’ll remember. ♥️

When my writing coach @annswindell screamed “THE BANANA” as our group was critiquing a passage from my novel, I laughed so hard. Honestly, I had little to no thought about including a banana in a pretty intense scene, other than I knew it was something that had to be there. It goes with two of the main characters and is supposed to be breakfast, gets left behind in a car and then gets taken back home uneaten. It just kind of…. exists. However, Ann pointed out how it acts as a physical anchor as it pops in throughout the scene—something I’d only subconsciously realized. So grateful for Ann and her #writingwithgracecourse! I’m learning so much. 🍌
