One of my prayers is that Deep Cries Out will sell 10,000 copies. Some publishers will look at that number and laugh because it’s too small. Some authors will look at that number and laugh because it seems unattainable. Either way, I’m keeping this 👆🏼encouragement close, because as a friend reminded me yesterday, Deep Cries Out has a purpose greater than I can see. 🩵

#nofilter 4️⃣0️⃣ I’m noticing changes more; the soft crepe of skin on my forearms that used to be firm, the blur in my vision between what’s near and far, the grays sprouting up along my part. I’ve known my husband for half of these years, and my daughter for over a quarter of them. I’ve been fiercely and unconditionally loved in ways I couldn’t have asked for and don’t deserve. It’s not lost on me that each year—how fast they go!—is a blessing. I hope that a day older is a day wiser, a day more in love with the good God who gives me every breath. I’ll keep changing, failing, growing, and I’ll still keep fielding questions from my daughter like I did five minutes ago when she asked, “Mom, what’s gonna be the last thing you do before you die?” But God willing, the answer in another 40 or so years will be the same as it is today: to smile, and keep giving Him all the glory.

People who have lost hope. It’s beautiful to be told that this story is moving people in ways I’d never dared, and I am humbled more than I can say. In many ways, today is bittersweet because the story of Deep Cries Out is no longer just mine; it’s yours. At the prompting of a friend, I began writing Deep Cries Out in January of 2023 as a way to process crippling anxiety and depression. What started as a practical exercise in journaling quickly morphed into a fictional eighty-thousand word novel about a woman named Aimee.

Is Deep Cries Out perfect? Absolutely not. Like me, these characters are broken and flawed. However, it’s not lost on me that for someone, this will be their favorite book of all time. Conversely, another person will certainly throw it in the trash or against the wall in disgust. (It’s okay to have strong feelings about books, I get it.)

I love Aimee’s story. I hope you see yourself in her journey of healing, but even more, I pray you find God’s love for you in these pages, and that no matter what you’re going through, you hold on to him, because nothing is impossible.

We went to Carlsbad Caverns today—Z and K’s first time and my first time back since I was seven.

For the last few weeks, God’s been pressing me to EXPECT his goodness.

It’s so easy to spiral into hopelessness and anxiety. The world is dark. But acknowledging that fact doesn’t negate hope. It doesn’t diminish the power of the light.

Today was such a reminder: there IS life in the deepest pit. There IS beauty in the darkest place. It’s a testament not only to God’s faithfulness but to his character… and it’s there, WAITING for us.

“This is what the Lord says: “I will go before you and level the mountains. I will smash down gates of bronze and cut through bars of iron. And I will give you treasures hidden in the darkness— secret riches. I will do this so you may know that I am the Lord, the God of Israel, the one who calls you by name.”

Here’s what’s on my heart 👉🏼 I’m tired. Putting a book into the world is tiring. Writing two books in just over two years? Even more so. Deep Cries Out is coming out in just a few months, and with it comes a HUGE push for marketing. Every word written, every word spoken is tried and tested. First by me, then critique partners. Then an editor. Then book sellers. Then readers. Will they buy the story? Will they actually crack the cover and read the book? Will they ENJOY the story and be moved enough to share it with others who’d like it?

The what-ifs are endless. But God is reminding me to be thankful in every circumstance—in the wait for that email from an agent, in the resounding silence after sending email after email introducing myself to influencers, while people are reading what I’ve written—because guess what? While the waiting may seem infinite, He actually is.

We were Valentines just under a month after our first date. He gave me a puppy from Build-a-Bear holding a heart that said “I love you.” He told me later he was nervous to give it to me because his friends said it was nuts to tell someone you loved them after less than a month of knowing them. But he shouldn’t have been nervous, because we’d both already said it, we both already knew. I gave him a beta fish (yes, a real fish), and a year later, we got married. Our daughter has the puppy in her room, and the fish has long-since died, but we still say I love you every day. We still know.

Zac and I have shared hundreds of hours of conversation across thousands of miles all centering on the whys and why nots of the last seven years. Despite the ebb and flow of time, some things have withstood erosion: not the place or the job or the side-hustle or even the passion project, but the call that stretches us awake and yawns long hours into the night. The call to give when there’s nothing left. To be present when attention fades. To love against the pain. To burn a forest of darkness with a single match of faith. Today was the culmination of dreams that only God could make real. We are so thankful to our friends at @mygracecommunity for inviting us to serve their amazing congregation this morning—we had such a fun turn out and were overjoyed to see everyone enjoying our coffee (and that all our equipment behaved for the trailer’s maiden voyage 😂)!
